Durability
One of the key indicators of durability is weight. In general, the heavier it is, the more durable it’s going to be. The most expensive tables weigh more than 200 lbs. They have a lot of thick, heavy materials that are built to last. The Sport Squad FX48, being priced under $100, is therefore made with lighter and less durable materials.
However, if little kids are the ones using it, then durability is less of an issue. Kids don’t play with as much force as teenagers and adults. Overall, this isn’t a table that is built to handle aggressive play long-term.
The cabinet is made out of particle board – which may deteriorate over time. The graphics on the side could peel off as well. The plastic men are more susceptible to damage because it’s a less durable material.
Gameplay
Stability isn’t as much of a concern for kids, but the table will likely move during play. This will affect gameplay, as movement alone can cause a goal to be scored. This used to happen on the table I played with as a kid. The good news is that it will happen to both sides, so it tends to even out in the end.
The leg levelers are a key feature. They will help create a more level playing surface if it’s on an even floor. The surface is unlikely to be even – because it’s thin – so leg levelers may help, even if it’s just a little. Expect to have some dead spots however, where the ball lies still at times during play, because the surface isn’t totally level.
The gameplay in general is going to be slower compared to more expensive models, but that is actually a plus for younger children who are just beginners. The plastic players don’t provide as much force on shots as metal ones do.
It comes with a scoring system that is easy for kids to keep track of. The ball retrieval is right behind the goal and is pretty easy to reach. The handles provide a good grip, but they aren’t the most comfortable either.
The rods aren’t going to be the smoothest without ball bearings, but for a table in this price range, that’s about what you can expect.
Aesthetics
The graphics on the cabinet give the table a youthful appearance. The black cabinet/legs works well with the green surface, white/black men, and the chrome rods. The graphics however can peel and take away from the appearance.
Who’s It For?
If you’re looking for a toy to give to your kids in the 5- 10 age range that’s priced around $100, the Sport Squad FX48 might be right down your alley. It’s also an option if you don’t have much space for a table. If your shopping for this table, chances are you’re not looking for longevity. You just want something for your kids to play with casually. You can always buy a more expensive table down the road as your kids get older.
If you’re looking for an alternative, the Playcraft Sport 48″ foosball table costs about $50 more but weighs twice as much.
